Audio Editing & Podcasting 101 - June 2nd (Darien PL) and June 4th
(UCONN Torrington)
Are you interested in learning about podcasting and how you might use
it in your library? In this workshop, participants will learn to create
podcasts using free open source software and inexpensive equipment. We
will also explore different formats for podcasting and
learn how to publish our masterpieces. Even if you don't want to
podcast, learning to record and edit audio is handy if you want to
create online tutorials, videos, or record events and programs held in
your library.

Screencasting 101: Creating Online Tutorials - June 3rd (Darien PL) and
June 5th (UCONN Torrington)
Do you spend lots of time showing people the same computer, database or
internet procedures? Screencasting software will let you create video
recordings of those procedures and post them on the web for others to
view. In this workshop we'll us Wink, a free open source software
package, to record and edit screencasts. We'll also look at options for
posting your screencasts online.

Social Software: Using Technology to Manage Your World - June 6th -
(MLSC)
What can social software really do? In this workshop we will look at a
variety of social software applications that you can use to organize
information from the web. Workshop participants will explore software
that keeps you organized, even on the go. We will also look at ways you
can leverage the software to help your users find quality content
quickly and create their own libraries on the go.

MS Publisher Pt.1-2 - June 10th (Pt.1) and June 17th (Pt.2) - (MLSC)
In part 1 of the workshop you will be introduced to basic desktop
publishing techniques. We'll be examining the set-up of the program and
its use of templates. We'll focus on the toolbar and the hidden
controls for tools. Bring work material and you should have time to get
started on your project. In part 2 we'll continue to explore the
features of MS Publisher. We'll focus on multi-page documents, like
flyers and newsletters.

Widgets, Mashups and Web Services - June 11th - (MLSC)
It's becoming easier than ever to combine content from different places
in order to create brand new applications. Novel tools and
web-accessible sources of information allow one to do such things as:
Incorporate other RSS feeds into your own web site, create your own
interactive maps, grab reviews and cover images for books, armed only
with a url and ISBN. Curious? Come learn how! In this hands-on class,
we'll learn to use these technologies in a library context.

Your Library's Cyber Security: Inside and Out - June 12th (WLSC)
This workshop will cover how to probe your library's computers and
networks for weaknesses, focusing on how to protect those
computers/networks and plug any security holes. This workshop will not
cover security policies, password selection/use, or security
administration and management for specific servers or networks.

Microsoft Word 2007 - June 19th (Darien PL)
Devote a day to mastering the topic in this workshop and multiply the
efficiency with which you can work in Microsoft Word 2007. Learn how to
do mail merges the easy way. Eliminate inconsistent tabs and indents,
create and format tables with ease, and discover great tips on applying
attractive customized formats. In addition workshop participants will
explore how to change the tools on toolbars, and work with graphical
objects in their document.
Introduction to Flash 8 - June 23rd (MLSC)
Flash is a powerful tool to create movies, tutorials, games, and other
interactive content. In this workshop we will cover some of the basic
tools and features in Flash 8, create shapes, import graphics, add
motion and hyperlinks to get us on the way to create simple web
animation.

Federal Documents on the Internet - June 26th (Farmington PL) and June
27th (WLSC)
Federal web sites are a rich, accurate, and timely resource for many
reference questions. In this hands-on workshop you’ll practice using
terrific federal search engines, become familiar with federal
pathfinders and explore free agency web sites that can supplement your
reference collections.
