Re: CLC/OCLC Direct

In this time of economic adversity, I am writing to remind you of an
opportunity for CT libraries to save money by going direct to OCLC for
products and services through CLC/OCLC Direct.
This program was begun in FY 2007-2008 at the behest of library directors
who wanted to cut overhead costs associated with OCLC cataloging,
interlibrary loan, and other products and services. Those libraries and
consortia have had a full year to assess their satisfaction, and all of them
are renewing, thanks to the excellent service provided by Andy Bush and the
team at OCLC.
If you haven't already done it, I urge you to submit a Statement of Interest
online at http://www.ctlibrarians.org/services/oclc/oclc_soi.html. This will
generate a request to Andy Bush to provide you with a quote for your FY
2008-2009 projected costs; Andy will also answer any questions regarding
your library's use of OCLC products and services. Then you can submit a
Letter of Commitment for 2008-2009
(http://www.ctlibrarians.org/services/oclc/commitletter.pdf) the deadline
for which is June 6, 2008.
The only additional cost to your library will be a $300 minimum training
deposit which will be held in a deposit account at CLC; this may be carried
over as long as you like, and there is no maximum amount. I include below
the CLC/OCLC Direct Training Team's preliminary 2008-2009 schedule. The
training team includes staff from participating libraries and OCLC Eastern;
if you don't see what you want, volunteer to be part of the training team so
that you can get what you want! (I also invite you to check out 2007-2008's
remaining training sessions--Wikis and Advanced Google Tools on June 2 and
Assessment on June 11 (http://www.ctlibrarians.org/#homeSpring).
Proposed CLC/OCLC Direct Training schedule 2008-2009:
1. Two day course on library management
2. Two day course on reference for paraprofessionals
3. Serials cataloging
4. AV cataloging/cataloging digital collections
5. RSS feeds (to set up a program to electronically notify users when
materials of interest to them are newly added to the collection)
6. Dewey webinar/LC subject headings webinar

8. Website assessment
