Don't miss these presentations on Advanced Google Tools and Wikis for
Libraries with Dan Ream, Director of Library Outreach & Distance Education
at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Wikis for Libraries is Monday June 2, from 1:00 to 4:00.
Advanced Google Tools is Tuesday, June 3, from 9:00 to noon.
Both sessions will be held at Groton Public Library. Go to
http://www.ctlibrarians.org/#homeSpring for more info and to register.
ADVANCED GOOGLE TOOLS covers everything you need to know about Google,
including Google Scholar, Google Book Search, Google Blog Search, Google
Customized Search Engines, Google Language Tools, Blogger.com, the Google
home page service, Gmail, and Google Maps and Google Earth, and "mashups"
integrating data with both. You can learn to make your own Customized Google
that searches only sites you trust and how to use Google to search scholarly
sources only.
WIKIS FOR LIBRARIES will look at wikis from several perspectives--as
reference tools, with both strengths and weaknesses, and as collaborative
working tools used by libraries and other organizations in internal
operations. Dan will show prominent examples of wikis and best practices in
wiki development and use. Should your library staff be using wikis for
answering reference questions ... or anything else? The world at large is
using wikis and librarians should understand why - and why not - these tools
should be used.
