Author to talk about Pilgrims at Voluntown Library
VOLUNTOWN Glenn Alan Cheney, author of over 20 books, will discuss his latest book, thanksgiving: The Pilgrims First Year in America, at Voluntown Public Library on Tuesday, May 20, at 7:00 p.m.
Cheneys book reports virtually every known details about the Pilgrims terribly difficult time between the landing of the Mayflower and the famous harvest feast celebrated about a year later.
Americans need to understand where their culture comes from, Cheney says. Our tradition of hard work, independence, democratic decisions, and religious freedom come from an experience that killed half the people who landed at Plymouth.
Thanksgiving details the horrific 66-day voyage across the Atlantic, the tragic winter spent aboard the Mayflower in Cape Cod Bay, and the miracle of a Patuxet Indian who spoke fluent English, having already crossed the Atlantic four times.
The Pilgrims were not the cartoon characters that many Americans imagine them to be, Cheney says. They were real people who watched family members and friends die as they tried to settle in a place where they could practice their religious beliefs and own their own land.
Glenn Alan Cheney is a resident of Sprague, Conn.
