I'm not certain about the sole disadvantage.    I don't think  that our students would think to look at the 500's on the shelf when they are searching for Robotics information, for example.  Or to look for a dictionary of chemistry when they are seeking information about a table of elements.  

I do put old almanacs on circulation and mostly teachers will sign those out to develop lessons.  Students never sign them out.  Students will come to the library for the purpose of verifying some instant statistic and go directly to the reference shelf. That seems easier to me. 

 Isn't our purpose to make materials accessible to our patrons?

Many of  our students are already struggling with literacy.  Dual language  is another factor.  I would not want to put obstacles in their paths.  I would not want to force them to become used to a different system than most public and higher education libraries use.  I feel a need to give  students as much practice as possible in preparation for taking on their roles in life after school.

I would want the students to be able to feel familiar and comfortable in the environment.  Unless there were some terrific benefits derived from this inter-shelving idea, I don't think it worth our while.

I would like to share thoughts about this topic, too.  Could we continue
to discuss openly on the list?

My first thought was wow! neat idea.  Then, I thought about instances
where I would want to use an almanac , for example.  Suppose I was
seeking the population of CT...I would probably use the almanac for
that...but if the almanac was kept with the CT books, then I would not
be able to find similar information for MA and CA etc. 

So with that in mind, I wonder if integrating really general reference
works is such a good idea!  It sounds to me more like making reference
collections into "Ready Reference" and eliminating other, more specific
works like encyclopedia of science would be in the 500s instead of in
the reference collection.  

Has anyone done this?

Hi,

Are there any public libraries in Connecticut that have shelved their
Reference

Collection among it's Non-Fiction Collection??

If your library has done this, do you like it??

How do your patrons like it???

I know that one downside is that a patron may take over a intershelved
reference

book over to the circulation desk to check it out and then learn that it
must stay

in the library.  Result being a unhappy patron.

We are in the thinking stages of this at the Whittemore Library and want

to hear the pros and cons.

Can anyone lead us to any recently published article(s) on this
subject???
